The Importance of Tailoring Your Cover Letter to the Job

Some may say a cover letter isn’t necessary in today’s business world. If you get one piece of advice from this post, read this: a cover letter is still relevant and necessary in 2023.

Think of your cover letter as the handshake to the professional relationship you are creating with the company. It’s your first impression, your elevator speech, your introduction. A cover letter is an opportunity to demonstrate your enthusiasm for the position and highlight why you are a great fit for the company.  The cover letter also allows you to control the narrative of your resume and sell your soft skills.

Are you still not convinced a cover letter is necessary? The truth is that a great cover letter may get you an interview faster than a mediocre resume. Why? Because written communication is a key skill all employers are looking for, and the best way for them to see your written communication skills in action is your cover letter.

Your cover letter should be as specific to the job as your resume. Research the company and the position you are applying for. Take note of specific skills detailed in the job posting and identify your skills that align with what the company is looking for. Be familiar with the company’s mission, vision, and value statement. Use alike terms in your cover letter to show you fit into the corporate culture.

Some companies use ATS (applicant tracking system) software, making it critical for your cover letter and resume to use strong key words.
